The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has done so many amazing things for the Hispanic population and higher education that it has encouraged me to take part and give back in any way that I possible. The conference will give me the opportunity to develop myself both professionally and personally with many experts in their fields and share ideas. To be able to congregate with intelligent individuals from backgrounds just like mine and discussing the opportunities and advancement for the Hispanic community sounds absolutely incredible and an opportunity not to be missed.
I currently work for a non-profit health clinic that was specifically created to assist those in the migrant farm working community and low income families. I hope to make people from my community proud and show them that I am working for them as much as I am a part of them. I am also currently working on my MBA and getting close to graduating. Once I complete my degree I will continue on with my education and pursue a doctoral degree in economics. Education has always been very important in my life; it is

I’d like to be a great representation of the Bakersfield Hispanic community, of the CSUB community and make my community proud. By attending this conference I would be able to develop my skills by taking as many workshops that I can continually filling my head with valuable information that can be transferable on my return. Listening to and gaining knowledge from prominent Hispanic figures from around the country just sounds absolutely amazing. The experiences will be shared with us will help us learn and advance ourselves, encouraging the selected individuals to strive to become the greatest we can be. It is very exciting to think about all of the networking and dialogue with people from all over the country; discussing the future and how we can make it better for the Hispanic
When I was in elementary, I was taught that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas, and he was painted as a great explorer. It was not until my sophomore year of high school when I took Chicano Studies from Los Angeles City College, that I realised that the picture I had was not complete. The Chicano Studies class opened my eyes to see how sugar coated the history I learned growing up. Learning how marginalized group’s story is not told, made me want to get involved with those who do not have a voice. I had been involved in our local community clinic at the encouragement of my parents, but it was not until I took the class that I realized how important the work really was. Recently my immigration Health Care committee teamed up with other
Imagine all your life you been surrounded with people that have the same characteristic as you. You didn't even know that you been separated into a group in which you classify in depending where you live, the color of your skin and income level. All my life I have been surrounded with latinos, the group I belong to at school, where I live, and daily activities i do. I didn't even know my race impacted my life until I went to college and explored places out of my comfort zone. Throughout history people have been separated into a specific group based on the color of their skin and how they physically look. These groups were separated into a dominant and nondominant group, which were whites the dominant group and minorities (african americans, asians, mexicans etc…) the non dominant group, but as times passes by minorities start to rebel to have equal dominance as whites. Now we have more freedom and power in this world. I am going to share experience I had when I was growing up that impacted my life being the race I am.
When we have dreams we do everything possible to achieve them. We are sometimes faced with barriers that prevent, or make it harder for us to accomplish our goals. Latinos in the United States work hard to give their families a better life. Latinos all have faced many challenging circumstances in order to accomplish their dreams. Latinos look up to other Latinos and when they see other Latinos that have succeed then they feel that they too can succeed in what ever they put their mind to. George Lopez is a Mexican American comedian and actor. He serves as a great role model for every Latino. He went through a lot of tough situations that made his life hard. George Lopez has not only served as a great example of a Latino accomplishing his goals through hard circumstances, but he has never forgotten where he comes from, he has always given back to the community and has also represented the Latino community in the united states.
According to Mrs. Turner, many of what they will accomplish in the future will depend on politics, academic laws, students and the advocacy of donors and sponsors. The executive director was able to share her perspective regarding individuals wanting to take this route as a career. She continued, “Working in the non-profit world when you make that choice if that is what you want to do with your life. It’s a passion and a commitment to the organization, a commitment from the heart. Don’t expect to get rich, (Unless, you are the Red Cross, YMCA or the National United Way they may make good money, I am not sure) it’s not a 9am to 5pm job, more like 7am -7pm and sometimes more, but you have to love what you do and do it for the mission, for that cause.” It was interesting to interview an executive director who is interested in improving the life of individuals like me who need it. I hope their organization continues to be successful and thrive from the obstacles and the issues they may face along the way. The Hispanic League improves the lives of other, it is not surprising to hear they were selected as a bright spot in Hispanic Education on Educational Excellence for Hispanics by the White House Initiative. Being part of the organization not only as a staff but also as a volunteer or a member can make a difference. Not only for others but also
For this article, it was important to be able to talk to professionals that have experienced dealing with the portrayal of Latinos, either personal or professional experiences. To gain a further understand the portrayal of Latinos in news and film, five subjects were interviewed about their opinion on the topic. I am attending college to be able to give back to my community by establishing a business. I plan to establish a business that specifically caters to my low-income community in San Diego based on innovative thinking and altruism. Living in an environment known for drugs and violence has made an impact on me as a Hispanic individual because I realized that the components that attributed to the deterioration of my community were imposed on us by stereotypes and prejudice. There was a time when I blamed my skin color and the “incapable” adults in my community for my social hardships. I blamed my Latino predecessors when I walked into a store and I was followed by an employee because I believed that their wrongdoings created the instinct of prejudice in others around me.
This event was inspired by the desire to create something to invite the rest of campus can come to.
In South East Los Angeles the majority of people who live there are the Latino communities. People who live in South East Los Angeles tend to be lower class people which means the neighborhoods won’t look like what one sees at Beverly Hills. Within the Latino communities ones values are help up on a pedestal. One of the emerging values that stand out in these communities would be environmental concern. If one were to walk around South East Los Angeles it wouldn’t be difficult to find trash or furniture dumped on the sidewalk. The photo above is of a main intersection within the city of South Gate. This specific corner has always been a popular dump site for the people in the neighborhood. According to Henslin, “the environment was viewed as
As far as, this event tomorrow, I did review the site and it’s a mixer for teaching opportunities? Can you give me some advice as to how I would incorporate
I’m interested in attending the conference because I believe it would be interesting and very valuable to be around other people of other ethnicities interact and learn about what it’s like to be them. Since I’ve been going to Bellevue I’ve personally haven’t taken the opportunity to branch out as much and go to other clubs besides the BSU and Rotary to get to know others from other ethnicities and countries, and from my knowledge about the conference there is a good reputation of other ethnicities so I will be able to take advantage of the opportunity and socialize. I also have two young sisters who are in High School, look up to me and I try to be the best role model that I can be knowing I am a first generation student.
Eventually working with motivational speakers to create my own non-profit organization and if possible even to work on a school to get equal opportunity for education.
What: My main goal I plan to accomplish by attending this event is to for a couple of reasons. First, I plan to research a few companies. I plan on asking questions to find out about entry level positions. I will also be able to go over my résumé with them, and explain how I can be an ideal candidate for any position that I would qualify for.
The experience of selecting, training and organizing the group in Mexico and preparing them to travel and work for a summer in the U.S. was very challenging. I had to organize meetings with more than a hundred university students, interview them
I learned a lot about myself and my ability to adapt to new environments, and I also realized certain things about Spanish and American culture that I would have never known had I not gone on this trip. I noticed, mainly from my own doing, that Americans always make their presence known, and the culture tries to wiggle its way into every aspect of a foreign country. By the end of the trip, I could clearly distinguish who were American tourists, which I think says a thousand words about our egoistic values and lack of regard for other cultures. I will be taking these observations back with me to the States so I can continue learning and growing as an individual. I am grateful for all the cultural engagement opportunities this dialogue gave to me, as it was these experiences and interactions that immersed me in the Spanish culture and provided me with a new well-rounded view of the background of the language I have learned for the last 8
For my cultural experience, I decided to connect with my roots. Even though I am Hispanic American, my parents never truly exposed me to my Mexican culture. This assignment seemed like the perfect opportunity to connect with elements of my heritage.
