As a diverse student, in a very low income community I have always been known to standing up for others, as well as for myself. Having this natural drive i found myself taking a huge role in our high school Beta Club. The agency I participated at for my ten hours of service learning this semester was the Plain City food pantry. The food pantry is located on 156 W Main St, Plain City, OH 43064. There are many people that run this agency. A couple names are Phyllis and Jane. I participated March 2nd from 9:30 to 11:30, March 3rd from 9:00 to 12:00, April 4th, from 9:30 to 11:30 and April 6th from 9:00 to 12:00.

Saturday I was working the volunteer session from 9a to about 3:30pm. After the session was over, I prepared close to 30 invitation letters to city and county officials in Washoe, Storey, Lyon, Churchill, and Carson City. We are inviting them to attend the poverty simulation during the agency conference at the end of September. I got those printed and sign so they could be mailed out Monday morning. Because it is common for some government organizations to take substantial time off in August, I wanted those letters out as early as possible to give time for them to plan. Reminder emails or post cards will be sent in at the end of August.

The meeting was held at the Glenwood Landing School Auditorium. It was hosted by the North Shore Schools Board of Education. It convened at six- thirty p.m. on Thursday October 6th, 2016 at 60 Cody Avenue, Glen Head, NY 11545. This meeting discussed issues, concerns, and matters that addressed the needs of the schools, students and community. The purpose of the North Shore Board of Education is to serve as a liaison between the community and the Board regarding legislative matters that have a direct bearing on fiscal or educational aspects of the North Shore Central School District. The Board of Education consists of seven individuals whose primary responsibilities include: establishing general policies consistent with the laws of New York State and the rules and regulations of the State Education Department.

At the social we had a D.J., we played corn hole and sang karaoke, some people fished, and some played volleyball. For the chili cook off portion we had all of our alumni members bring a pot of chili to be judged. Once the judging was finished and our president announced the winner, we all ate. We also grilled hot dogs for the people who did not want chili. After we all got done eating our advisors lit the fire and the marshmallow roasting began. We made s’mores and talked until it was time to do the pieing. Once it was time to pie the officers our advisors called us all to gather in front of the fire and for the officers to line up. This last Monday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Harvest Table in Brookings SD. It was a wonderful and eye-opening experience. Anna and I had planned to do a fun leaf activity where children could color over leaves on paper or use paint to stamp the leaves on paper.

The community service that I participated in for this assignment is helping out at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds getting ready for the annual Fair. This process took place over the course of weeks, but I pitched in the day before the fair on Monday 8/22/16 from 10:30-4:30. The week of the the fair was 8-23 to 8-28.

The last week of our time here we all had the opportunity to go down to the soup kitchen for a few hours to help serve the guests. When we arrived, Randy, the co-director of Scott who is the founder, gave us a brief tour of the building and explained to us how the soup kitchen was founded. Randy also shared with us the multiple food donors, such as St.Ritas, the West Ohio Food Bank, and individuals from the community and surrounding areas. Some of the people who come to the Soup Kitchen see it as a sanctuary for spiritual care. After he explained the basic concepts of the organization to us, we divided and each had different tasks. My name is Lucretia Dixon and I am the Children’s and youth director for my church. I was wondering if we could volunteer as a group at the food bank. There will be about 15- 20 participants that would help out. Some of our youth need community service hours for college credits.
