Graduation Speech : English Class

It was my first writing class as a college freshmen and I did not know what to expect, like whether or not the class would be harder compared to what I took in high school or even if I would enjoy taking class. But as soon as day one turned in into week one, than soon week fifteen I felt more comfortable in the class than what I have probably felt in the beginning. I felt like I could write anything my professor threw at me, because through writing I could express my individuality. It gives me the freedom to express myself through words, and write about things I felt passionate about writing about. I felt as though I writing because I wanted to, and less because I was assigned to do so.

In previous years, at my high school, we were given the opportunity to be present in an elementary school classroom. For an hour each day, a group of us would ride to the elementary school to help out teachers that needed an extra hand in regards to maintaining their classroom, and allowing them focus more on their lessons instead of housekeeping responsibilities. Being surrounded by elementary age students for these few years really helped me develop deep love and passion for teaching young children. Life set me on a different career path as I attended Georgia Tech last year in pursue of a Business Degree. Throughout the year, as I sat in my business classes, doing my best to pay attention, but I could just tell that my heart was not into all that the business world had to offer. All along, I knew that my heart belonged in the classroom, and after careful consideration, I decided to transfer to the University of North Georgia at Dahlonega. Education 2130, was the first education class I had the opportunity to take, and it required 20 hours of field experience. My first collegiate field experience was nothing short of enlightening, and allowed me to immerse and expand my knowledge in the education world.

Looking back at my previous essays I wrote for this course makes me to understand the progress I have made during this semester. This course helped to develop my comprehensive writing ability. However most importantly through this course, I experienced different kinds of essay writing and is able to advance my critical thinking skills. It is clear to me though I have to work more on my grammar and need to give more time to develop my MLA format reference writing. Throughout this semester I saw myself developing as a good writer. Now I can easily identify a problem, organize my thoughts, outline my paper and write it. I am also able to easily find errors and apply the proper correction efficiently.

To begin, I attended Borel Middle School in San Mateo, Ca. The first year was really hard because I was in sixth grade and didn’t really know anyone but my friends that I went to Elementary School with. All throughout my three years at Borel I strongly believe that I would be going to Aragon High School. My final year at Borel was the worst year of school in my life! Most of my teacher were expecting us to do a minimum of at least three hours of homework every night. I would never have time to do anything with my family, even on the weekends I would spend at least an hour of doing homework. Then I would have to study for at least three or more tests a week. I never had any time to enjoy my life. Thats when I started to hate school. I would wake up and never want to go. I would be paranoid that I did not do something or get something wrong and the teachers would yell at me. The only teacher that I loved being with my my spainish teacher, Mrs. Pietri. We had the best relationship ever! Everyday at lunch I would go to her class and help her out with anything and just hang out with her. I would tell her all of my struggles and she would try to help me through them all. So then by the end of the year, teachers started to attack us with work. On the last week of school I had to write a paper on this topic and it was worth half of my grade so I could not mess up on that project. Even during winter break and spring break I had things to do. I hated school. But then as the year

English Composition is a whirlwind of knowledge which you must face whether you want to or not. Throughout this semester, I have overcome many obstacles while taking this class. I have also learned many things, some relating to English, some relating to life in general. The thing most strikingly obvious was the amount of personal issues I had this semester. My mother needed to have emergency surgery, I got into a car accident, leaving me without a way to campus, and I had to balance classes with organizations that are required for my scholarship. While most people think that this would be considered a large obstacle, I saw it as the opposite. I was able to stay on top of my work and I am extremely happy with the way most of my work turned out. This experience made me proud of myself and I became inspired to put in more effort into my work and I enjoyed writing even more.

In this class, I have really realized my strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills. Before this class, whenever I had a paper to write usually I would wait to the last minute and wing it. However, in this class I could not simply do that. So much research had to be done in order to compose these papers that it was a bit overwhelming. Learning to narrow my focus was key not only to surviving this class but to composing a well-organized paper without rambling as well. I learned that I’m a bit ambitious whenever I feel passionate about a subject, which can make writing the paper easy, however it makes it hard to feel like the paper is ever perfect. On the bright side this often leads me to put a lot of hours into a paper in hopes that it will

Students in honors classes often have many stereotypes that follow them around. The students are labeled as the ‘smart’ kids, they are assumed to know how to do assignments with ease, teased (usually in a kind matter) about having to achieve that 100% on a test, and it is assumed that the classes are quite boring since the students must be focused on their studies. Being in the class with an honors class proved some of said stereotypes false and others true. If this class had any representation of the rest of 10th grade honors classes, then it can be said that honors students help themselves learn by creating an environment that helps them become excited to be in class.

Ever since I was in the third grade, I’ve wanted to go to the University of Michigan. My dad, who did not attend college, loved the school since he was a kid, mostly because of its football success. Every Saturday we’d watched the Michigan game, so I grew up liking the university, even though I didn’t really know why. Friends and family would ask me what I wanted to do when I was older, but all I replied was, “To go to U of M!” They all scoffed at me and told me how hard I had to work to get there, but I didn’t realize all the challenges that I would eventually face.

When I was in high school I had one goal, I would graduate top of my class and go to the University of Florida for pre-medicine, then onto their medical school. I never considered that I would want anything else, so I went to a specialty high school that would allow me to specialize in Biomedical sciences(STEM) and never even thought about the possibility of a life other than the one I had so precisely planned out for myself. When my nephews were born my sophomore year all of my priorities changed. I cared more about hearing their first words than attending my BioMed classes, and more about going to mommy and me days, than spending a day in the clinic working on beat up football players. I became so entranced with their little growing personalities that I shoved my goals to a back burner. By the time graduation rolled around I wasn 't failing by any means but my dreams of being valedictorian were long gone, and I felt like I needed to find a whole new life plan instead of trying to get back to the old one.

During high school a person typically meets a variety of new people. During my high school experience, I had the chance to meet a guy by the name Justin Okel. I first met Justin in middle school where we remained acquaintances for the next many years. I never really knew him. I had always thought he was the average kid in a happy middle class family. He never really gave anyone a reason not to believe that either. It wasn 't until midway through high school that I realized I didn 't even know him or his family at all. Over the past couple years I have been able to develop a great relationship with him as I began to know the real side of him that no one else really knew until recently. Justin suffered extremely harsh circumstances during the years leading up to graduation. He was mentally abused, put on probation, and kicked out of his house; forced to graduate high school, and start College completely on his own. I had the opportunity to get in touch with him so he could share some of his story.

Throughout the previous years of my education, I have explored a variety of English and writing courses where I learned to dissect and explore the various meanings and intentions of authors and poets as well as my peers. Aside from the mandatory conventions that must be mastered in writing to ensure clarity, there are some characteristics that run deeper. These are what dictate whether or not a writer may truly become successful. A common theme that has been reinforced in my experiences is that of respect.

This semester of intermediate comp. Was one to remember. The amount of projects we had made me think of how to write better. Before this class I wasn't too good at writing. I was able to figure out the basics but I wasn't able to word them correctly. The class I took to help me was reading and writer's workshop. It was a helpful class but I feel that I could have done better than I actually portrayed. We typed essays and also made our own magazine as a project. When I first went in that class my writing wasn't too good. I would just do the minimum amount that was required.But since then I have learned to add more description to every story I write so I can try and write to my full potential. My teacher helped me a lot with all my writing last year and she always pushed me to write more so I can always get my full thought out. Some aspects were hard for me but now that i've had so many different classes to help me my writing i've learned how to push myself so that the aspects wouldn't hurt me anymore.there are always things in writing that I still need to work on but i'll only get better if I keep writing. The teachers ive had always made us write essays which I wasn't always to excited for but I feel that it improved my writing and nonetheless made me a better writer. The essays made me think and do research which got me involved into my writing I feel that in this class I could have done a little better then I actually did but I still think that it was a great experience and that I learned a lot in the end.

High school is a very memorable time of every person’s life. The older we get, the more we realize that we are who we are because of that special place and special people around us who are not a part of our lives anymore. We and our classmates have had a unique set of shared experiences with each other and these shared memories often binds us forever. This motivated me to organize a high school reunion for all my old class and relive o experiences once again by just getting together, laughing and sharing those memories.

Writing is one of the most difficult subjects I have taken on this spring semester. Being able to identify the different types of essays as well as putting my skills together to write them is the most difficult to me. Although I have learned from the negative and positive feedback, I still feel there is a huge area that needs improvement. Starting this out I didn’t quite know what to expect or what level my writing skills were at. I will most definitely be able to use what I’ve learned for my future education as well as my future career. Intellectually I know I had a smart, compassionate instructor that just wanted to absolute best for me in this aspect.
