Geography
The geography of Canada describes the geographic features of Canada, the world's
second largest country in total area.
Situated in northern North America (constituting 41% of the continent's area), Canada
spans a vast, diverse territory between the North Pacific Ocean to the west and
the North Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Arctic Ocean to the north (hence the
country's motto "From sea to sea"), with the United States to the south (contiguous
United States) and northwest (Alaska). Greenland is to the northeast; off the southern
coast of Newfoundland lies Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, an overseas collectivity of
France. Since 1925, Canada has claimed the portion of the Arctic between 60°W and
141°W longitude to the North Pole; however, this claim is contested. [1] While

than both the U.S. and China; however, Canada ranks fourth in land area (i.e. total area
minus the area of lakes and rivers)—China is 9,326,410 km 2 (3,600,950 sq mi) and the

The historical growth of Canada's population is complex and has been influenced in
many different ways, such as indigenous populations, expansion of territory, and human
migration. Being a new world country, Canada has been predisposed to be a very

Canada has an extremley large geography which plays a tremendous role on many factors that affect Canadians. These factors both help and hinder Canada economically, socially and politically. The geography of Canada has also caused regions to form. For the most part, these regions exist due to physical that are present in Canada's landscape. Canada's geography has also had a large impact on the influences that affect settlers. Canada's relatively low popuation in comparison to the large land mass make Canada a place where people who desire to settle in high population, urban areas or large, isolated, and low-trafficked areas. The high population of people near the Canadian-American border is also a unique feature of Canada, due to the
China is the 3rd largest country in the world, with a total area of approximately 22,117 km. Located in Eastern Asia, between North Korea and Vietnam, it is bordered by a total of 15 countries, and has access to three seas, the East China Sea, Yellow Sea and South China Sea, and the Korea Bay.

Due to the receding Arctic ice there is now a partially open route through the Northwest Passage during certain parts of the year, which could pose a possible threat to Canada. According to the Canadian Ice Service and the US National Ice Center, the passage is almost clear and more than ever since the beginning of routine monitoring in 1972 (The Northwest Passage: In Dispute and Navigable). The opening of this passage has now sparked the interest of the US and Russia in wanting it to be officially deemed as international waters. The Northwest Passage is 7000km shorter than the Panama Canal from Europe to Asia (Byers). This would mean that international shipping companies would be able to save a great deal of time and money. There could also be the possibility to use super tankers to transport oil which is impossible to do through the Panama Canal (Byers). There are ship manufacturers that are currently designing and building vessels that would be able to withstand ice (Byers). The cruise ship industry is also interested in the use of the passage (Byers). There is a Russian
