No two people practice culture the exact same way. In the healthcare setting, especially in the United States, nurses and other healthcare workers are exposed to many different cultures. Asian Americans are a very diverse group in the United States, which include many races such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino, Indian, and many more. Birth country, ancestry, and family heritage are ways to categorize this specific group. According to the 2010 Census, the Asian American population has grown faster than any other group from 2000 to 2010 (Pew Research, 2012). Asian Americans are either immigrants from Asia or are descendants of immigrants. Asian Americans have an extensive history in the United States, starting from the early 19th Century, when many people arrived to work in agriculture, construction, and low-wage jobs. Not until 60 years ago were foreign-born Asian Americans permitted to become U.S. citizens (Pew Research, 2012). The number of Asian Americans in the Unites States continues to increase, and the top six U.S. Asian groups include, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Japanese (Pew Research, 2012). How do Asian Americans in the United States identity? Do they identify as being American, Asian, or a specific ethnic group? It is interesting to see how different people identify themselves. According to Pew Research, a small percentage of Asian Americans, 14 percent, identify themselves as being American, while only 1 in 5 people describe themselves as being Asian (2012). The spread of mental illness continues to be of concern especially in Britain. For statistic say that 70% of the prison population has a mental health disorder. As known, there are a high quantity of mental health disorders. As each 7 year period arrives, the English government do a survey in order to measure the various disorders which are common in our society today. This survey was done in 2009 and reported that for depression 2.6 in 100 people were diagnosed. As for anxiety, 4.7 in 100 people, phobias, 2.6 in 100 people, OCD, 1.3 in 100 people, eating disorders, 1.6 in 100 people. This survey also covered bipolar, schizophrenia and personality disorders. It enclosed that as for personality disorders, 3 to 5 people in every 100 are suffering.

Culture is the totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects, and behavior. It includes ideas, values, and artifacts of groups of people (Schaefer, 2006). Understanding culture can be tricky, ever ask “why do people act the way they do?”, “what made me do that”, “what was I thinking?” Physical abilities, educational background, and social background of how I was raised are important aspects of my life. The world is facing an emergency in the area of human rights in the mental health sector as human rights of the people with mental disabilities have been violating (World Health Organisation). . Many countries in the world and Australia itself have legislation to treat a person with mental illness against his/her wish or without their consent which is the abuse of their basic human rights. The mental health legislation which is called Involuntary Treatment Orders involves treatment and detention of people with mental illness against their wish and it is total violation of the rights of people with mental illness who are subjected to these treatment orders. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) recognizes that people with disabilities should have freedom from torture and will be given the right to make their own decisions (Barriga, 2013). Therefore, the mental health legislation in Australia also being reviewed by a number of Australian governments in the light of principles set out in UNCRPD (Mcsherry & Wilson, 2015). Consequently, there are some provisions have been made in the recent mental health reform specially to involuntary treatment orders to empower consumers rights which are going to be discussed in the following essay. A disparity can be defined as a difference, an inequality, a discrepancy, a gap, or an inconsistency. Within individual cultures, there are health disparities, or specific differences of a population in the existence of health outcomes, disease, health care access, and value of health care services existing across ethnic and racial groups. Disparities can stand for ineffectiveness within the system of health care and thus accounting for unnecessary costs. (Douglas and Paquiao, 2010) The Filipino culture has numerous factors leading to insufficient access to care and reduced quality of care, some of them being cultural habits concerning diet, language, and screening rates, as well as behavioral and mental health. Every culture has its own traditional beliefs and values amongst which can be shared transculturally to better international health whereas there are also those that are influenced by the Filipino culture that can be seen as non beneficial to future generations.
