English Composition One: To Be an Essay or Not to Be an Essay That Is the Question

Langston Hughes was an African-American writer in the 1920's. He was best known for his stories in the Harlem Renaissance about the Black Culture. Hughes emphasized the theme that “Black is Beautiful.” In Hughes' short story, “Why, You Reckon,” he writes through the main character, the narrator, a poor, 'hongry' Black. Hughes uses character and scene description, symbolism, themes, and dialogue to set his story up and make it more interesting and historical to the reader.

When writing an essay it is essential to allow for the piece to develop and become its own organic living being. The author must allow for the paper to make mistakes therefore it can review itself and correct any confusion. There are no clear cut definitions of what justice actually is or even what it means for a society to be just. There are many different opinions and beliefs, two of which belongs to the philosophers John Rawls and Plato. Rawls’s idea of justice revolves around the two main principles in which he believes how society should run. These two principles, equal rights and the rearrangement of inequalities, ensure that everyone has the free will to do and become who they want without being limitations placed on by society. Plato’s, on the other hand, offers a completely different idea as to what a just society is. According to Plato, justice is a result of a highly structured society, in which each person has a certain role to perform, doing only what they are most suited for. At the top of Plato's society are the guardians, those who renounced personal interests for the sake of knowledge, and their words are justice. Although both Rawls and Plato offer two completely different version of what it means for a society to be just, I ultimately agree with Rawls’s

A well written essay must consist of many different writing elements in order bring together a strong, and well organized structure, to the essay. Each paper must be well thought out, that consists of an introduction, has body paragraphs that supports each claim, and ends with a conclusion. Even though all of these parts of the essay are critical to the essays writing process, yet the most significant part of the essay is the thesis statement because it sets up the initial structure of the paper; therefore, the thesis creates the main claim of the essay which is followed by two reasons of why that claim is true, by setting up the thesis this way the writer then has the material to construct well organized body paragraphs and conclusion.

I still consider writing as a complex task to do, I have to do a lot of preparations before I start, such as searching information on the internet or in the library, having an outline, writing a draft and so on. When I start writing, I have to take care of the grammar, spelling of the words, and add enough figurative language; after I have finished, I should have a works cited page and check again about the grammar and spelling. It is a tiring process to write an essay, but I try my best to enjoy it.
