The world at times either ignores outcast and misfits or makes fun of them. Tim Burton likes the idea of characters who do not fit in but have a significant impact on their world. In Burton's films Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands, each character has a special personality that sets them apart from the rest. Burton uses lighting and color in his films to prove that no one needs to flow with society in order to be pleased and comfortable with who they are.
Low key lighting is used in Edward Scissorhands to show the darkness and loneliness of Edward that sets him apart from the rest of the town. Burton uses the image of a dark hill with a mansion on top that towers over the neighborhood. The neighborhood in Edward Scissorhands is almost perfect with each house and person wearing their own color and style. When Edward comes along in his black dark clothes and pale features, they begin to question who he is and start to be alarmed. As he stays longer and reveals his talents and personality, people start to get used to him and like him. His uniqueness to the neighborhood brought everyone a new appreciation for him. Additionally, in Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Charlie had ripped dirty clothes and was very pale. In the town he lived in, everyone else seemed wealthier and wore nicer clothes. His rag-like clothes made him stand out and caused people to look down upon him. When he wins the golden ticket he does not change a bit or act spoiled like the other kids who have won too. As the group of the lucky individuals walk through the factory, Charlie’s sweet self never changes. Because of that Wonka starts to become fond of him. Therefore, both Charlie and Edward embraced who they were and the outcome was
