ENC/1101 Reflection

When I first entered english composition 1101, I expected this course to be manageable. As an outstanding english student at Clarke Central high school, I believed that I had enough knowledge to excel in this course with no challenges. Dr. Catherine Rogers was able to knock me off of my high horse and make me realize that I has a lot more to learn about reading and writing. She is very comprehensive and analytical, which caused her to give me a c average on my midterm assignments. I put the blame on myself because I believe that I should have been more open to Dr. Rogers’ methods with pre-writing and revision. Now I think highly of reading and writing.

It is still so surreal to reflect back on my first semester as an incoming college student in the ENC1101 course, analyzing at my progression as a reader and writer in literacy. Since the first day of class I set in stone my goals for this class: receive a 4.0 GPA, develop my connecting theories skills in writing, and become more aware of objectives for each Unit throughout the course. All of these goals became achievements that not only make others proud but most importantly give me self pride. In order to earn the grades and achieve these goals, I went after every opportunity that I was given as an incoming college student, such as office hours and extra credit. By taking this course I have gained confidence with the utilization of literacy, and made an addition to my group of impactful literacy sponsors. Once students are finished with high school they assume that there is nothing else to learn beyond the stereotypical five paragraph essay, but they are so wrong. I was able to obtain so much knowledge about numerous course concepts from Writing about Writing, articles, and my professor. These concepts will carry on with me throughout a bright future of writing courses, job interviews, and any other skills that require literacy. The four outcomes listed below will help illuminate how I improved as a writer, by being a driven college student and going out of the way to earn my achievements in this course. My major, nursing, will require a great amount of communication skills. I believe English 1101 will help me further develop my communication skills. It is also very important to me to challenge myself and overcome obstacles to make myself a better writer. I found that high school English classes were moderately easy because there were no challenges set forth. I would rather take a class that makes me put forth hard work to earn a good grade and will teach me things I need to know to succeed, than a class I can get an easy A in that teaches me nothing. What does it take to pass your most fearful class? What can you do to overcome the fear and pass the class that with exceeding pride? More specifically, what does it take and what would you truly need to do to successful pass ENG-111. ENG-111 has truly been one of my fearful classes, but through using self-pertained rules, I pass the class with flying colors. For those looking forward into taking the course, by taking advantage of this particular advice, you would truly become successful in taking the class. Thus, to become successful in ENG-111 make sure to complete every assignment, manage your time properly, and review everything before submitting.

To be perfectly honest my recollection of Comp 121 is a little foggy, i took the course roughly a year and a half ago and during my first semester and it was one of my first college level courses. From what i can recall it was a interesting and enjoyable, The professor Jacob Sherlock is no longer with the school, but was a professional writer along with a life-long lover and student of the written word. We regularly discussed current events and the class wide give and take of various ideas and viewpoints was truly enlightening and are easily amongst my most enjoyable and memorable college experiences. Looking back at the first couple days in ENC 1101 I was absolutely overwhelmed and stressed about the amount of essay’s that were going to be done. I looked at the syllabus which provided all the work that was going to be done and I wanted to jump of a bridge. Not being fully prepared in high school didn’t help me with my panic. I truly felt in the beginning that it was going to be too hard and I was not going to make it. Through the class I learned many things, the first paper was a minor headache but it really helped me with thoughts, how an essay supposed to flow, and the style of a paper. As I explored the writing samples provided in the Writing Placement 2015 files I got a sense of what students do in the different courses. Although I would take advantage of any writing course I can see myself benefiting more from ENL110. With some editing and hard work from my part my writing can most definitely be in the A and B range of ENL 110. This does not mean that I can come up with an A+ draft. However, I am certain that my work has potential and when I work hard and try my very best the outcome is always positive. I can see a reflection of my work in the samples provided in the A and B range of ENL 110. My goal for when I finish this course to have such an amazing A range paper that it will be published with the other sample assignmensts.

Throughout this paper, I will inform you of ENC 1101 from why I’m nervous about taking this class and what is causing me to worry. I will tell you about two references from the syllabus that stood out to me and why. Last I will advise you if I’m ready for this course and if I feel I’m prepared.

During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work. Taking the time to read, brainstorm my thoughts, write an outline, rough draft after rough draft, reading constructive criticism of others helped in the revisions of my papers’ reaching the best possible outcome. When selecting English 102, I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. During the first semester of English 1101 there were times I struggled but, I did see progression in my work along the way. Looking back on my writings from previous years, my teachers have always noticed the amount of detail I put into my papers. What the noticed I struggled in was sentence structure and excessive use of run-ons. Turning in my first writing assignment this year, I noticed those problems were still there. I understood I needed to work on my simple mistakes in order to be at the college level writing that I’m expected to be at next year.

I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.

It’s ENC 1101, Not knowing what to expect I entered the room with absolute fear, after all it was my first year of college. Although I’ve never been quite fond of English in the past, I’ve always excelled in the subject. I had yet to work for my grade and no English course I had taken proved to be a challenge through my eyes. I am a huge procrastinator, if not one of the biggest when it comes to assignments. I most likely wrote papers the night before or the day of and still managed to average an “A” on all of them. This bad habit led me to believe that I was cheating myself. Throughout my scholastic years I always had the mentality of asking “what could this class possibly teach me that I didn’t already know?” I believed that my writing

The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don’t know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine-tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style.

I entered this class with a general idea of what was going to be expected of me and what I was going to have to accomplish in order to be successful, and I credit the extent of my preparation for this course to the extensive instruction and critiques provided for me by my high school teachers. By them I was taught the fundamentals of composition which allowed me the time and energy to more deeply understand the intricacies of good writing which I would be taught in college. Although I learned many new concepts in English 101, I feel as though I had a stable foundation to build on and enhance with more refined skills.
