The United States of America was founded upon five founding ideals: liberty, opportunity, rights, democracy, and equality. All five of these ideals have shaped what kind of country the United States has become and what it stands for. By definition, equality is “the state of being of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.” The United States has always been changing the availability of equality, depending on the time period. Compared to the founding period, every American has the same rights and same opportunities. This was not always so, however, and some groups of Americans had less rights and opportunities than others. One group in particular that had different levels of equality throughout history was African Americans. While African Americans do have equality nowadays, this was not always the case. It had taken centuries before African Americans could have the same rights and opportunities as other groups of Americans. Fortunately, this has led to equality amongst all Americans.

The Declaration of Independence clearly states, “all men are created equal.” However that is not the case early in America’s life. African Americans are taken from their homes and put to work as slaves. Women are discriminated against because of their gender. People with in poverty had few freedoms. When the Declaration of Independence says all people have a right to liberty, it is lying. Many races, gender, and social classes were discriminated and given limited freedoms. They thought that they should have a written document of rights that set them free from Britain ruling. They also believed that if the government ever becomes corrupt and doesn’t provide the rights of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, then it should be the people’s job to change or destroy it. Britain was very disrespectful to the American Colonists over this process in the 13 Colonies. One situation that occurred was when King George refused to abolish the slave trade, only wanting to protect the profitable trade which angered the colonists. Also, the British denied North Carolina the ability to establish a judiciary system in March of 1774. Similar issues arose in South Carolina and Pennsylvania. The colonists wanted a Jury in America instead of only in Britain. As in the Preamble, Jefferson noted that “it becomes necessary for one person to dissolve the political bands, which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them to”.As you can see, the colonists wanted a large change in the way their lifestyle was going causing them to want a document that gave them rights. Have you ever wondered how the amendment can achieve equality? My stance in this essay is that mostly all amendments can achieve equality. Equality is possible because with the amendments that we have it allows all men and women to have the same opportunities in life, live some sort of freedom, and have a fair life. Based on the Constitution, it is possible for individuals in society to achieve equality because the first, second, thirteenth,and nineteenth amendments allow citizens of the United States to have certain freedoms otherwise not granted in the Constitution.

The three foundations of government are freedom, equality and order picking from these foundations which one weighs the heaviest in importance would come down to which of these foundations could in some fashion provide all three. Equality is the of the utmost importance in any society and if only one foundation could prevail it would and rightfully so should be equality. Equality can provide pieces of all three of these basic and essential foundations. If everyone is equal, everyone will have the same freedoms, and there will be some order in that. Each person deserves freedom but equal freedom and there needs to be order but that order should be protecting the equality of individuals. Order is used to provide equality “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor. It must be demanded by the oppressed” (King Jr, p. 454). One of the biggest roles that order should fulfill is protecting equality.
