Exercise is a much needed aspect of people's lives and is involved in a variety of outlets. One major outlet would be sports. Sports, in general, produce valuable results for a person, some more than others. Cross country is an immensely beneficial sport due to the physical endurance developed, the mental toughness gained, and the lessons of teamwork received. Part of building a strong, athletic body is to have physical endurance. People can be bulked up, but without endurance, their strength will not last long. An outstanding way to build physical endurance is through cross country. Even though running, in general, works on endurance, cross country exercises the body more than the typical run. The primary part of teamwork practiced in this sport is motivation. Whether running during practice or in a meet, my friends and I would be verbally encourage each other to run harder and be the best we could be. Though these are merely words articulated, they are quite powerful during a run and can really help with the mental battles. I know that without my team’s presence, my capabilities to progress in cross country would become nonexistent. Another, and less known, piece of teamwork depicted in this sport appears during the meets. When running at the meets, the athletes not only try to beat their own time and hopefully achieve the goal of being in the top ten, but they also run for their teammates in that same race. In addition to individual competitions, there are also team competitions in which the team that has the overall best placements in the race will win. Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. When an individual is fit the body uses its nutrition to help heal and main certain hydration when conducting physical activity. When most people run up a hill, they slow down. When I see a hill, I speed up and say to myself: “I LOVE hills!” Of course, I don’t really mean it. Nobody’s fond of running up hills, especially on a violently hot day in the middle of August. I was taught this mantra by one of my Cross Country coaches, Kelly. If I don’t think that I can do something, the first thing I try is telling myself that I can. Mindset is about 75% of your performance in a race. I love to run because it makes me feel like I can do things that are impossible. When I get back from a five mile run in the pouring rain, I feel like everything is right with the world.
One of the more important skills students will learn outside the classroom is teamwork. This quality can not be taught it must be learned by experience. Members will be on teams to compete in competitions. Students must learn the limits and strengths of their team member if they wish to succeed. Teamwork is a key skill that everyone should have installed in them at a young age.The brain of a child is like a sponge, they absorb everything and use it in the future. Playing football is not an individual sport unlike competitive swim or boxing, when playing a sport heavy contact or not as a team a child learns to work with others to achieve a common goal of winning or advancing. Children become cooperative and have the ability to collaborate with others making them more resourceful and beneficial in any real life situation. According to live strong representative and author of article “Benefits of Teamworks in Sports” Wade Harle, stated “ Teamwork in sports can help give participants stronger communication skills and teach them to work better with others. Additional advantages to teamwork in sports are learning to deal with conflict and varieties of different ideas within a team.” As the young child grows and prospers into a young adult having the teamwork ability and characteristic will only gain them the upper hand when applying for jobs, working on projects and in life commitments and relationships.
Many people never understand the importance of team sports and activities until they have been a part of one. Being involved in a team demonstrates personal strengths can be used to grow as a team. Being a part of my soccer team, Fox Run, for seven years of my life truly changed every person on the team. Even though our team has split apart due to seniors graduating, the lessons we learned will continue to last forever. From fourth grade to eleventh, the sport through Fox Run has shown me to respect others, create lasting friendships, and persevere through the wins and losses.

Participating in organized basketball and football for ten years presented me the opportunity to achieve common goals working side-by-side with a variety of different personalities. That's because both teams share things in common but have lots of differences. They are full of different ages and separate their team in different ways. But they both love to practice after school and welcome anyone on to the team.
