It has been suggested that creativity has been an evolutionarily propagated part of the human psyche that has allowed them to survive and thrive in the world (Cosmides and Tooby, 2002; Jung, 2014;). If this is the case, it would suggest that creativity, sometimes thought of as a novelty, is actually a vital part of what it means to be human, and that creativity serves a very important function in humans’ lives. Evolution is ultimately a creative endeavor (Darwin, 2003). Darwin (2003) asserted that evolution occurs through change, through new ways of being in the world. Creativity is nature’s way of coming up with original ways of handling the problems of existence. Assuming that this argument is true, it would not be much of a surprise to discover that human psychological health and psychotherapeutic change are also contingent on creativity. Thus, creativity would be a vital part of the psychotherapeutic process. The following paper outlines some of the prevailing research on the study of creativity and psychotherapy with the purpose of suggesting that an exploratory study of creativity in psychotherapy would be an important study for the field of psychology. There have been many definitions of creativity, which suggests that the experience of creativity is subjective and diverse. Boden (2004) defined creativity as “the ability to come up with ideas or artifacts that are new, surprising and valuable” (p. 1). Kahn & Piorkowski (1974) suggested that creativity “refers to a
Creativity for me is an inclination to make or do something. During my senior year I realized there wasn't an organization on my campus that engaged people with the environment. I wanted to create a fun environment that invited people who I had never previously talked with to come together and be united by a passion for the outdoors. It was important to me as an upperclassman with an inherent influence on younger students to inspire action for a noble cause. I had a vision for a club that gave members the opportunity to learn how to enjoy the outdoors. I knew that many students wanted to learn how to surf and go hiking on beautiful trails, all they needed was an outstretched hand inviting them to go. Reaching out my hand I created the Prickly
In the context of creativity’s stated definition, we will proceed to group our arguments into three themes of factors: cognitive ability, expertise training, and environmental conditions. The human brain is highly adaptable and can continue to develop new cognitive abilities, even past adulthood (Norman, 2015). Proper cognitive expertise and training can help workers produce and operate in ingenious ways (Ginamarie, Lertiz & Mumford, 2004). Finally, the working environment can both motivate or stifle creative output. Managers can influence all three components: expertise, thinking skills, and motivation (Amabile, 1998).
What creativity actually is when you use your imagination, allowing things in the mind to occur that wouldn’t actually occur and also things to better the world. “Being creative is not only about thinking: it is about feeling” (160). You can not just think but you have to have feelings to make sure that you doing things right and feeling like you made something productive in the time. Being creative requires a long process, “magination which is the process of bringing to mind things that are not present to our senses; creativity, which is the process of developing original ideas that
Creativity is about risk taking and making connections, allowing children to explore and express themselves through a variety of media or materials including, dance, music, making things, drawing, painting and make believe and to make new things emerge as a result. Being creative is strongly linked to play and can emerge through a child being absorbed in their own actions and ideas.
Creativity is often more about the process rather than the end project, it is useful for many reasons:
Paulus & Nijstad (2003) defined creativity as “the development of original ideas that are useful or influential”(p.3). That is to say,
In What Do We Know About Creativity? Jose Gomez defines an idea as being creative when it “brings new insight to a given situation….[it] includes the ability to change one’s approach to a problem, produce ideas that are both relevant and unusual” (30). This quote is very important because it gives an idea of a way to classify what a creative idea can look like. I find it particularly difficult to define what creativity means because when I think of the word creativity, I think of an indefinite amount of things that would fit under the word. I believe coming up with a concise definition would be near impossible without leaving out multiple ways to exercise the word. The way this author describes a creative idea is helpful because he manages to
Muffled pop music shakes the thin walls, sweat-drenched zombies cross the greenways, and I, I sit in the living room with the lights off experiencing a mild existential crisis, with pen in hand. I consider what I think I am, how I think I accomplished great tasks, and what creativity might be. I searched in for more complex relationships, but that failed. I turned to the simple, and found the answer to all three of my questions: being different. To be creative is to be different. I am different, I attribute my progress in life to acting different, and I consider creativity as simply being different.
Creativity to me it means a sense of individuality that makes you apart from other people or your ways of thinking and actions. that you have that others may not have and It makes you special. My creative side, I think I am very good at problem solving I often help people with problems and brainstorm and come up with solutions to their situations. a I feel like that's one of the strongest characteristics such as helping with things at home and talking to family and friends. Talk to friends about their problems and come up with ideas to make it better and solve the situation at the moment. Sometimes I have really good things to say and ways that can help out at the moment that could be really useful . Also, part of this reason is why I think I want to be a Psychologist. Creative thinking is one of the best things for either from a school assignment like a project to problem-solving with difficult situations which many would find very
Creativity has been an inherent part of human experience since remote times when visual forms helped our ancestors to communicate leaving us with many recorded moments of their history. In a creative process multiple aspects bind together, things come out the intellect but also there are other states of consciousness and unconsciousness phenomena involved. A similar thing occurs in the contemplation of a piece, where we can have different interpretations, various sensations and opinions, but in one way or another through art humans develop common connections in between individual experiences. Art cultivates sensitivity and it can be used to explore the world in new forms that perhaps otherwise might not have been considered, allowing
Because creativity is subjective it will never be accurately measured. Researcher’s that acknowledge this may be
The term creativity is used for the purpose of describing the ability that is concerned with the process of creating something new or valuable. This ability allows a person to surpass the rules, practices, methods, forms or similar kind of activities that the traditional society may be performing at that time. Creativity is one of the most important things that have allowed the people of the society to move forward and urge for development. All the development that has been made in various aspects of human life can be directly connected with the creativity. All the industry leaders of the world have secured this place because of the level of creativity and innovation that they showed. They used this creativity for creating something new that has allowed them to develop completely new methods for this purpose.
When asked to define creativity, why does it have so many meanings? Creativity is one of those words when asked to define, have many definitions because there are many ways to go about being creative. Therefore having a viable meaning of that word is almost impossible because in general creativity varies from one person to the next. When it comes to defining creativity, it is pretty simple, to me is a way to measure one 's imagination, cognitive skills and how you fluently you can use those creative attributes in your day to day life while keeping an open mind to other ideas.
There are many definitions, from many people of what creativity is and what it is not. It only seems logical to start with my own definition for a sequential frame of reference. I believe that creativity is having vision and exercising cognitive processes that when combined with personality traits, influential experiences, environments, and learned skillsets generate original ideas by an individual. That is a synthesis of three of the five creativity research paradigms: person, process, and place, summarized in Creativity: Theories and Themes: Research, Development, and Practice. (Runco et.al, 2014)
Creativity is the fact of finding something new or generating new idea and turning them into reality creativity is the most important thing that leads to success. Also creativity is the ability to find and discover hidden ways or patterns to fix any problem and connect and fill the gaps.
