Quality of service should be one of the most important and well monitored goals for any medical facility, from your small town family doctor’s office, to nursing and rehabilitation facilities, all the way to large hospital systems. The quality of service provided in a facility doesn’t just affect the patients. Quality of service also affects the bottom line, or whether or not the hospital system is profitable. In order to better access the system’s current quality of service and to devise improvement plans I would need to explore issues that have significant effect on quality of care such as, patient satisfaction and retention, medical errors
Leadership and collaboration are integral parts of every role of a DNP graduate (Chism, 2016). The competencies are part of the AACN Essentials, standards of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), and Practice Doctorate Nurse Practitioner Entry-Level Competencies (Chism, 2016). In the evolving health care environment, a guiding policy and personnel planning is required with respect to the numbers, types and mix of professionals. To overcome the challenges of the existing health care system and practice environment, “nurses need to be well educated, team oriented, adaptable and able to apply competencies relevant to leadership” (The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, 2011, p. 270). Health care system is complex and has conflicting interests. Nurse helps the patient and family to connect to their social support systems and help to coordinate care and improve patient outcomes. Evidence shows that high quality nursing care can reduce cost
In the increasingly complex, ever changing environment of today’s healthcare, effective leaders are essential to help drive positive change resulting in increased access to care with positive outcomes for as many as possible. In its 2010 report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recognized that nurses are well positioned to play a key role in the transformation of our healthcare system in the United States (U.S.) (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). In The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) specifically identifies organizational and systems leadership as a core competency for advanced
Making a difference in people’s lives is what I have been dreaming ever since I was young. What way can it be fully achieved, but by becoming a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). The CNL as one of the important members of the health care team, I share its mission to improve the patient outcome and empower the people in creating a harmonious working environment that will facilitate improvement of communication, promote wellness, and continuously gain new knowledge. I believe this can be accomplished by being attentive to the needs of the people around us and be available to support whenever assistance is needed. The major success is not base in the plan, but the participation of each individual and being aware of our strengths
Healthcare changes occurring today along with shrinking budgets and reimbursement rates for hospitals has forced institution CEOs to do more with less. Changes and restructuring of various health facilities require nursing leaders with flexibility and adaptability. Nurse leaders must also consider budgetary constraints, cost effectiveness, patient safety, and quality care while maintaining focus on improved patient outcome. The responsibility of ensuring patients receive safe and high quality care belongs to every employee in the hospital, including support staff such as IV therapy. In this hospital, this led to the development of a nurse director position to oversee the

In the area of nursing administration, an article by Schuettner, Van Shell, and Sheriff (2015), is aimed at promoting a minimum of graduate level degree for nurse administrators in order to better prepare them for leadership roles. The authors indicate that a shortage of nursing leaders is expected by the year 2020 due to a majority of qualified leaders retiring. Accordingly, this will create the need for competent nurse leaders to alleviate the deficiencies. Mandating a graduate level education for future nurse leaders, will influence their ability to be more effective in the administrative role (Schuettner, Van Shell, & Sheriff, 2015). This article depicts the urgency and need of professionally trained and educated nurse administrators to meet the future demand created by the retiring professionals.
The health system has experienced rapid changes and multifaceted shift in patient care and leadership– business concepts, administrative roles, and patient care continuum. As a result, changes have greatly influenced the role assumed by nursing leaders in the past 10 years. Subsequently, nurse leaders redefined their roles in the nursing field and executive arena, moving away from traditional nursing roles in the organizational chart to equal roles in the Chief suites (C-suites). Therefore, as nurse leaders move from clinical units to the boardrooms, their imprints leave a mark to all nurses reporting to them. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing,” discusses vital concepts on nursing leaderships. As based from the same report, three fundamental concepts of how the roles of Chief Nurse Officers impact nurses can be identified - Executive Role Definitions, Expertise and Knowledge Transformation, and Leadership Representation and Networking.
Healthcare organizations must have nurse leaders for all levels of administration and its related pioneers should make a move to recognize and limit the potential antagonistic impacts of their choices on persistent healthcare. HCOs should utilize administration structures and procedures all
The continuing growth of technology in health care is ground breaking at this time. With the advancements in technology and health care there has become a rift between providers and patients. Patients want the best quality care from the health care system. Despite this justifiably positive view that, overall, quality of care is high in this country, many factors point to the fact that the quality of care is declining. It is believed that patient-physician relationships are not as strong as they once were, causing distrust and uncertainty. The health care field is ever changing and health care providers need to stay current on those changes, both now and in the future. Quality patient care will greatly remain impacted from the health care provider shortages and in return patient satisfaction will continue to be impacted.
An increase in the satisfaction of a customer with medical professional personnel is what enhances overall satisfaction with a certain facility. The first step in ensuring that this is achieved is recruiting personnel with the necessary skills and experience. According to Chang, the general administrative personnel have little influence on the quality of services delivered, client satisfaction and trust. Medical facility sustainability can be achieved through maintaining a high quality of customer services, understanding their preferences and providing services that meet their expectations.
