In Cary, Illinois we are incredibly lucky to have excellent youth sports programs that are built upon strong core values. These programs focus on the responsibility to demonstrate and develop good character among all participants. CBA is part of CHARACTER COUNTS! which is the largest nonprofit, coalition of schools, communities and nonprofit organizations in the country working to advance character education by teaching the Six Pillars of Good Character. As parents, we are staunch believers of the educational value high school presents, and the excitements youth sports bring us. However, most of us are to blame, behind the bright basketball court lights lie an ugly underbelly, a monstrous façade called politics. During the championship seasons, we’ve heard and even seen tales of
Team sports for example not only provide physical activity for children. They also introduce them to the meaning of “teamwork” and ability
Sports was a part of my life growing up - whether it was attending games with my family to support the Huskies at Rentschler Field or Wolfpack hockey games at the Hartford Civic Center or even being part of a basketball team since before middle school, I have grown to love the atmosphere that sport brings. Whether it was assisting my Mom coach in our town’s T-Ball league or working with the disabled or even with the students at Wish Elementary School, through sports, I have been able to build a solid sense of a wider community. It is not just about the game itself but it is about what happens in-between and after. It is the indescribable bonds that form between
“Are you fired up?!?” the General yelled. The answer, of course, was “Yes sir, fired up, sir!” This was how we started every year of Dixie Basketball Camp as we came together in the Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) auditorium. It is hard to explain what the Dixie Basketball Camp is all about. Experiencing it is really the only way of knowing. Dixie teaches kids every year the value of hard work along with the fundamentals of basketball. The camp has a unique and special enthusiasm, filled with cheering and chants, many of which have continued for many years and have made Dixie one-of-a-kind. The General, Joe Dean Jr., has been running the camp for over twenty years. He inspires five hundred campers every year to work hard and sweat on the basketball court. Over the past eight years, he has served as a role model for me at the camp. The Dixie Basketball Camp has been a significant part of my life since the fourth grade; I could not help but be upset as I drove away from the campus after my eighth and final year at the world famous Dixie Basketball Camp and Country Club, “Hey!” I was going to miss all of the enthusiasm the most.
One thing almost every young child looks forward to is the activity of play. Kids love nothing more than to go outside, run around with friends, and get dirty. If children are already active at a young age, why not encourage them to continue by enrolling them in an organized youth sport program? Young people will gain many positive experiences by participating in organized physical activities, but none as important and influential as the social skills, physical skills, and mental skills developed and nurtured during their time in youth sport. As a result, the young participants can continue to build upon and cultivate these skills which will ultimately be transferred into their development as successful adults. Along with the social and
A plethora of reasons exist as to why a certain sport might signal importance to a state, but in Indiana, the sport happens to standout on a whole different level. Current Southeast Dubois Superintendent, Rick Allen, commented on why Indiana high school basketball remains superior saying, “One reason Indiana high school basketball is such a standout of a sport in Indiana is because of the community support behind the team” (Allen 2). The era of basketball between 1911-present remains crucial today not only for the big schools’ gyms in Indiana, but also for small towns gyms such as Huntingburg, Loogootee, Tell City, Ferdinand, and numerous others.
Stanlick stated that a community requires both common purposes and civic friendship, and Wes Moore’s basketball team fulfills those requirements perfectly. All of the members clearly display an interest in basketball, for they most likely play at the court every day. Wes Moore defines the court as a “meeting place for every element of a neighborhood’s cohort of young men” (p. 44) after noticing that a large variety of people, including high school students and drug dealers, stop there to play against each other. This means that basketball also serves as the common connection and goal for this community, for all of these different people arrive at the court so they can enjoy and participate in a fun competition. Additionally, everyone in the team is an active member of the community that displays civic friendship, and Wes Moore confirms this when he shows that they always go out to play.

The mission statement at UNC Wilmington states that they are committed to student engagement, creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression and resposible citizenship. These qualities are things that every student should look for when the big deciosion of where to go to college comes up. College is a big stepping stone for students, it shouldnt be about where all your friends are going, or where the parties are gonna be. The education and enviorment you are wanting to be in is what matters. I have dreams and aspirations of becoming a nurse, getting a BSN degree. UNCW has factors that stand out against any other school. Job prospects and salary are high, this means that when I leave UNCW I wont have to worry about whether or not
What comes to mind when you hear the song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan? Do you get teary-eyed and change the channel like the musician herself? When I hear this song, the first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of wide-eyed mistreated puppies and kittens. Who is behind these television ads, if you don’t already know? The answer is the ASPCA. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was the first humane society to be established in North America back in 1866. The organization’s goals and mission statement is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States,” (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). This non-profit organization’s focus is to get pets
Mastery Charter North’s high school basketball team made it to the finals of the Pennsylvania state tournament last year and are looking to improve this year. This paper will discuss how they plan on being successful again. They will depend on their group traits to keep them bonded together. Also they have some players stepping up and taking leadership roles, after the leaders from last year left.
The general theory from my generation (Generation X) and Baby Boomers is engagement is more likely to occur when there is a connection to “having a strong sense of the company's mission and purpose” (Garman, K., & Sorenson, S., 2013). I strongly stand by this statement and because I see what our purpose is I have been committed to my job for over 17 years. Our mission statement states that we are to provide affordable, decent housing too low to moderate income families. I see the impact of what our organization has done for the Lubbock community and, therefore, I fill that I am helping to meet our organization’s purpose. I think that Generation Y does not seek to find a purpose within their job because they are busy with “individual achievement”
Chapter VI describes how I would establish an exceptional youth basketball program. The chapter reviews important components like coaching strategy, skill development, and relationship building that a successful program must incorporate. This exceptional program is built on the coaching philosophy that athlete comes first before

Since the creation of man, sports have had a tremendous role in the way people live their lives. From the time we are born, until our elderly age, most of us are involved in some way with sports. Whether it is a scrimmage game of soccer at recess in elementary school, playing on the varsity athletic team or simply watching the Olympics or sporting events on television, sports have an influential role in our everyday lives. The outstanding popularity of the sports industry has profoundly affected youth sports organizations that an estimated twenty-six million children ages six through eighteen participate in at least one school or community based athletic program (Smith & Smoll, 1997). Well structured sport programs can provide youths with
