Bilbo's Archetypes In The Hobbit

Bilbo, Gandalf, and Smaug are examples of character archetypes. For example, Bilbo represents the hero. Gandalf represents the mentor. Smaug’s archetype is the threshold guardian. These functions or roles are like makeup that the characters wear in the story. In ‘The Hobbit’, Bilbo, Gandalf and Smaug play roles that help develop suspense in the story. Bilbo’s archetype can be recognized as the hero. This can be seen on page 256 which states, “As Thorin carefully explained, Mr. Baggins was still officially their expert burglar and investigator.” (The Hobbit, Tolkien, page 256). This means that the dwarves are counting on Bilbo to help them get through the adventure. On page 4 , another example is shown that says, “ This hobbit was a very well-to-do hobbit, and his name was Baggins.” (The Hobbit, Tolkien, page 4). Mr. Baggins was a hobbit that hated adventures, but Gandalf knew that he was the one that was destined to go on it. He is the one protecting the secrets, and the treasure. Page 18 shows this when it states, “ We must away; ere break of day, To win our harps of golds away from him!” (The Hobbit, Tolkien, page 18). Dragon Smaug has stolen the gold from the dwarves, and they must go and retrieve it. Adding more fuel to the fire, on page 24 it explains, “ Well, thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath. Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty and to spare!” (The Hobbit, Tolkien, page 241). Smaug was testing Bilbo, and was going to make him come out by fooling him, However, on page 234 it states, “Why not say ‘us fourteen’ and be done with it Mr. Lucky Number?” (The Hobbit, Tolkien, page 243). Even though they weren’t there, Smaug knew that Bilbo was not alone. He was trying to get Bilbo to come out to he could kill him. Dragon Smaug was going to protect the gold at all
