Homework Week 4 Discuss two of the common chronic conditions affecting the elderly and identify preventative measures that you (or your classmates) can take at your age if you were faced with a strong family history of the disease: Type II diabetes and Stroke Type II diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects the way the body uses glucose. With diabetes, the body can resist the effect of insulin or fails to produce enough insulin to preserve a glucose level within normal limits. Type II diabetes is becoming much more common than before and the occurrence is growing. Approximately 23.5 million people in the United States are living with type II diabetes (Fesselle, 2010). Symptoms of this disease include frequent urination, thirst, …show more content…
Decreasing blood pressure or managing it to maintain it at a normal range can decrease the risk by double. The ideal recommended blood pressure is 120/80 and under. Decreasing the amount of salt in the diet, avoiding high cholesterol foods and eating more fruits and vegetables can decrease blood pressure (Newlin, 2014). Losing weight is another way that a stroke can be prevented. Maintaining a normal body weight or a BMI less than 25 is ideal to help prevent a stroke. If overweight, losing 10 pounds can help prevent a stroke. Consuming a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean proteins can help with losing or maintaining a healthy weight. Physical activity is important in promoting health and preventing diseases. Exercising five time a week assists in losing weight and decreasing high blood pressure which can help prevent the risk of a stroke (Newlin, 2014). High blood glucose over time damages the blood vessels which makes it easier for blood clots to form increasing the risk of a stroke. Managing diabetes and maintaining blood glucose levels to stay within normal limits helps in preserving the health and wellness of blood vessels in the body. Diet and diabetic medications can help keep blood glucose within normal
Type 2 is characterized by the body’s inability to use insulin effectively because of a combination of resistance to insulin as well as an overall decrease production in insulin. There is a genetic predisposition to Type 2 diabetes, but there are several other factors that also put an individual at
Diabetes is a disease that cases blood glucose levels to rise higher than normal in the body. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes when being compared to type 1diabetes. When blood sugars rises to levels higher than normal it is called hyperglycemia. Diabetes, type 2 can result in many different issues that affect the body. There are many complications that are linked with diabetes for example, higher risk
29 million people in the United States (9.3 percent) have diabetes, and of those 29 million approximately 7.25 million are unaware that they are diabetic (www.cdc.gov). Diabetes describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body 's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Diabetes can be divided into two groups: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is also referred to as juvenile diabetes and is usually found in children and young adults. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. Type 1 diabetes restricts the body from producing insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Type 1 diabetes can be managed by using insulin therapy and other treatments to help those infected maintain insulin to convert sugars, starches and foods into energy(www.diabetes.org). Type 2 diabetes is the most common, people with Type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance meaning the body does not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas makes a surplus insulin to compensate for the lack on insulin in your body. However, over time your pancreas is not able to keep up and can not make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels(www.diabetes.org). Complications of diabetes in the long term include potential heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.
As a healthy child grows physically they are also growing emotionally. Do all children react to life the same? No, children have different needs and the react differently depending on how they see it. My mom talks “about her dad’s brothers were given the same treatment for punishment and how different her uncles turned out”. The different emotional stages people go through as they grow older.
Type II diabetes is a mixture of both genetic and environmental factors. It is a metabolic disorder that affects the way the body processes blood sugar due to the fact that the body cannot produce enough insulin. The victim often feels fatigued and thirsty that leads to frequent urination. Obesity is believed to be the primary cause of Type II diabetes to those who are genetically predisposed. Based on the American Diabetes Association, non-Hispanic blacks are second in being diagnosed with diabetes with 13.2%. Type II diabetes can come with many effects
Type two diabetes is the most common disease today, and it has a great impact on the lives of many people in the United States. Type two diabetes results when the body is resistant to insulin or impaired secretion of insulin by the pancreatic beta cells. The pancreas produces too much insulin, but over time it is not able to make an adequate amount of insulin needed in order to move the glucose into the cells. However, there are many factors that lead to type two diabetes. They are known to be genetic, high body weight, previously identified impaired fasting glucose levels or impaired glucose tolerance, family history of diabetes, and history of gestational diabetes or delivery of a baby over 9 pounds. Type two diabetes effects about 90% to 95% of the cases of disease in the US (Hinkle & Cheever, 2013). It's
Each stage of puzzle building corresponded with a stage of the Crucible project. Stage one: the class attempted to find a common idea. Stage two: the idea was set in stone, and questions were produced by small groups. Stage three: working hard to finish the project. Stage four was spent finishing and test running the scavenger hunt our class had designed. The stages of puzzle building were dumping out pieces, utilizing specialized groups, working hard to finish in time, and then finishing and helping others. These four stages parallel how our class put together the Crucible project. The Crucible proved that how when groups come together and collaborate things get done. Our English II class came together
Type 2 diabetes is a self-caused disease that prevents your body from using and producing insulin correctly which leads to high levels of sugar in the blood. When people consume too much or too little sugar, it affects their insulin resistance, which causes the pancreas to not maintain the right amount of insulin to keep the body's
Type 2 diabetes is a form of diabetes that is insulin resistant and it often results from excess body weight and physical inactivity.
Type II Diabetes is a growing disease that according to Ley, Ardisson Korat, Qi, Tobias, Cuilin, Lu and ... Hu (2016) approximately 415 million adults are affected by this disease world wide and in the United States in 2015, $348 million dollars was spent on treatment for diabetes. Additionally, the growing number of people who are projected to develop type II diabetes is
Diabetes is a metabolic disease where an individual’s blood glucose level is higher than normal standards. Diabetes is a long term condition that causes not only primary issues related to the disease but secondary problems as well. Diabetes also known and referred to by healthcare professionals as diabetes mellitus, which is a phrase used to describe a group of metabolic diseases in which a person’s body does not produce insulin at all, or a person’s body does not use insulin properly, which is called insulin resistance. Type I Diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin, approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type I. Type 2 diabetes is when the body does not use insulin properly and approximately 90% of all documented cases worldwide is of this type. (American Diabetes Association, 2014) All types of diabetes can be treated, type I has no known cure however there have been some cases where
There are many ways someone can prevent a stroke and it is all about recognizing certain health issues and being as healthy as possible. Diet and exercise are one of the main ways a person can prevent a stroke, especially if they are overweight. Eating fatty foods can increase the amount of fat deposits in the body which can eventually lead to clotting. Being overweight tends to result in high blood pressure or diabetes which are both main causes of a stroke. Controlling your blood pressure, the type and amount of food you consume, and exercising can be very preventative from having a stroke. It is also important to know your risks. If you know people in your family have high blood pressure, have had blood clots, or any heart problems, it is
Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong, chronic disease related to dysfunction in carbohydrates, protein and fat metabolism. Between 85 to 90% of diabetics suffer from type 2 diabetes. It is a
Type 2 Diabetes is when the body is not creating enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels at a maintained level. Tissue cells from muscle, fat and the liver are all created to take glucose out of the blood and pull it into the cells and produce it into energy. These cells require insulin
