Baseball players have less than 0.40 seconds to defend themselves from a whirling 100 mph ball hit by a 200lbs beast. And take into consideration that if the fielder takes more than 4.5 seconds to field and throw the ball to first base, then it becomes impossible for them to throw the runner out. The motor, cognitive, and visual skills needed to succeed in baseball may explain why many believe baseball is harder than softball.
Ever since 1887 when softball first became a sport, individuals compared the two. In the past, baseball was the most watched sport in the United States, which earned baseball the nickname of America's’ Pastime. During that time, individuals did not take women’s athletic abilities seriously, for which no females
First of all, the size of a baseball infield is 16,700 ft2 (Trifoso). That’s more than half the size of a softball infield! Others might see this as a difficulty because you have more ground to cover, but it just gives more time for the infielder to get the batter out at first. When the ball is hit to an infielder in baseball, they must get it to first base in 4.3 seconds (Trifoso). Just wait until you see how much time an infielder in softball has.
Since the softball field is much smaller than a baseball field, you have a lot less reaction time than you think. The pitching mound is closer to the home plate in a softball field. Therefore, when a pitch is thrown to the home plate, you have to see the ball and make sure that you have enough time to swing your bat. Also, while the pitching mound very close to home plate, the pitcher also has to figure out a way to get the batter out. They could throw curveballs, screwballs, or rise balls. This gives the batter much less of an advantage at the home plate. With the pitcher throwing these kinds of balls, the batter still has very little reaction
What sport do you think is harder baseball or softball? The reasons baseball is a harder sport is because of the tempo, the strength of players, and the size of the field that the players play on. The innings in baseball are played at a very fast pace, but the game is also two innings longer. The athletes that play baseball are also much stronger and faster. Lastly, in the sport of baseball, the average field size is 400 feet, and the average field in softball is 210 feet, therefore, making it harder to make catches. Overall there are many reasons why baseball is a harder sport than softball.
Out of all the vast variety of sports there are, baseball is the most challenging and difficult sport to play. No other sport compares to the degree of difficulty that you have to deal with, like you do in playing the game of baseball. There are so many different elements that make this game the most difficult. Three major elements stick out in my mind as to why this wonderful sport is the toughest of all. The three main factors in my mind are the increased physical and hand eye coordination component, the mental aspect of this game, and the human interdependence between umpires, which are a vital part in every play.
Believe it or not softball was created by males. People consider it a women’s sport though. Softball was created in 1887 when men joined together in Chicago Farragut baseball club to listen to Harvard vs Yale football game. The inventor of indoor baseball was George Hancock. The reason it was invented it because a Yale supporter threw and boxing glove at a Harvard fan while yell “let’s play ball”. It then became its own sport in 1991. http://softball.isport.com. The first game was played on Thanksgiving. The rules for softball we created in 1889 which was only 2 years after they game was even thought of.
In the game of softball the baselines are only sixty feet long. Therefore, you must run super fast in order to be safe at first base. However, baseball baselines are ninety feet long, so the infielders have more time to get the runner out, and the runners have a longer distance to run. Softball pitchers have an advantage because the pitching mound is so close. An elite softball pitcher can throw speeds topping seventy miles per hour. This means a softball pitch can reach the plate in only thirty-five hundredths of a second! That is actually faster than it takes a 100 miles per hour major league fastball to reach home plate. The baseball takes thirty-eight hundredths of a second. After locating the pitch, a softball batter only has about twenty-five milliseconds to decide to swing or not. That is about fifty-five percent less time than a major league baseball player has. The game of softball can be very challenging for a batter. However, it can be even more challenging for an infielder. When balls come off of the bat at about one hundred miles per hour, a softball
Baseball was one of these things that women picked up to keep the game alive. In 1856, baseball became America’s pastime. The league had strict rules for the women. They had to wear lipstick, couldn't have short hair and take classes that teach them to be charming. Pitchers for the league threw underhand. Many people attended the games because they were interested in seeing girls play ball. It could be said that the public opinion of people during this time about women was altered. Seeing them be able to freely play sports and well proved that girls could have different roles. This source was very good and helpful in explaining the roles of women in baseball during World War 2 and the differences they faced compared to men.
Most professional baseball pitchers can throw a fastball over 145 km/h (90 mph). This gives the batter less than half a second to read the pitch, decide whether to swing, and then try to hit the ball. No wonder hitting a baseball is considered one of the hardest things to do in sports!
Liz Johnson 5/1/15 Big History 5th-6th Softball, The Story of It All. Softball and baseball are the same thing, right? Wrong. Softball is the same as baseball, but it has a softer ball, right? Wrong again. So if it’s not the same as baseball and it doesn’t have a softer ball then what is it? Softball is its very own sport. Yes, it has similarities to baseball, but there are many differences. To fully understand softball you have to know its history, how it is played and how it works, what it is made of, and finally what it is all about. It was 1887 in Chicago, Illinois, the Yale vs. Harvard football game, this is where softball originated. A football game is where softball originated, not baseball. Softball has its own separate history of baseball. And that is the first discipline that I am going to cross; history. When it was announced that Yale won the game, a fan threw a boxing glove at a Harvard fan. As the glove was thrown, the Harvard fan grabbed a broom handle and swung at the glove. Right then George Hancock playfully shouted out “play ball!”. And then the very first softball game was played. Before I go into detail about the history and importance of softball I am going to explain how the game is played. There are four basic elements of softball. One: bases, Two: batting, Three: catching, and four: signs. There are four plates/ bases; first base, second base, third base, and home plate. When you are batting you try to hit the ball as far as you can when the pitcher
During the Olympics softball has won a pretty good amount of medals, but no one really talks about them or where they put the medals after, which is why in 1957 the softball Hall of Fame was made. In the USA Women’s National team there is a total of three consecutive Olympic gold medals(1996, 2000, 2004), one silver medal(2008), and a total of 197 softball players too. When softball started, it actually had it’s debut in the 1996 Olympics as a sport. In the 1996 Olympics Gold Medal Game, Dot Richardson, an orthopedic surgeon hit the game winning home run, which is why we have that gold medal in the Hall of Fame today. As softball is a well known sport, it did have a down downfall at the 2005 and the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics where that
Never knowing what pitch is going to come next is always an adrenaline rush while standing in the batters box. Fast pitch softball is a game that has physically and mentally changed my life for the past eleven years. It involves two teams, one who is home and the other who is away. The game consists of seven innings on a softball diamond. There is an upper half and lower half of each inning. The upper half begins with the home team on the field, consisting of nine players in the appropriate positions, and the away team at the plate batting with only nine to ten people in the roster. Offense is a major key to win a game. Making contact with the ball is probably the most difficult and frustrating thing in the world, because you just never know where the pitch is going to end up. There are many techniques to hitting, but we need to get down to the basics first.
Baseball is a difficult sport to play all around. Not that all sports are easy
Once you step in the batters box, your mind focuses on putting the ball in play. It gets more difficult the more you think about it and think about the physics. The pitcher stands 60 feet and 6 inches away on the mound looking at you, standing on an 10 inch (25 cm) rubber above the home plate. You stand at the plate knowing to might face a 95 to 100 mph fastball speeding at you with no force to stop it but the swing of the bat. (Seedlink. 2009) You have less than 2.5 seconds to decide on what pitch is coming at you and on whether to swing or not. Baseball is one of the most demanding sports for hand eye coordination. Hitting a 9.25 inch circumference ball with a 2.75 inch diameter round bat is one of the most challenging things an athlete
Baseball players have the choice to either play with wooden or composite bats. Baseball bats are a lot heavier than softball bats and they are also wider at the end. Baseballs measure between 9 to 9.25 inches in circumference and weighs between 5 to 5.25 ounces. Baseball pitchers have many different types of pitches as well, some examples are Fastballs: Four-seam, Two-seam, Cutter, Splitter, and Forkball. Breaking Balls: Curveball, Slider, Slurve, and Screwball. Changeups: Changeup, Palmball, and Circle Changeup.
In this world there are many things that are similar in some ways, but are completely different in others. In the world of sports there are in most cases a men’s version of a sport, and a women’s version of a sport, like fastpitch softball and baseball. Softball and baseball are similar sports, both use the same items to do the same job. Each individual player uses a ball, glove, helmet, bat, and cleats to accomplish the goals to play the games of softball and baseball. The goals are to have more runs than the other team at the end of the game. However, these two sports are not exactly alike like many spectators suspect they are.
