Over the course of my observations of McComas Gym’s weight room, it was easy to figure out what type of audience would be interested in my essay. Based off this audience, I developed a persona who represents the weight room community by combining many of the characteristics I observed in individuals in the weight room. My developed persona is an ideal representative of an “insider” to the weight room community, as well as a representative of my essay’s audience. The type of audience who would be interested in the essay I wrote would be members of the actual weight lifting community. By talking specifically about McComas weight room in my essay, the ideas and observations in the essay would be beneficial to someone that actually uses …show more content…
An example of this would be managers using the data I present in my essay about the weight room to decide which machines they should reduce, and which machines or pieces of equipment they should order more of. I developed a character to be a representative of the main audience for my essay by taking the characteristics of individuals observed in McComas’ weight room and combining them into one persona. Based off of this, the persona is a male Virginia Tech college student who is familiar with the weight room and the concepts of body building. He is in good physical shape, and wears typical gym clothing, such as gym shorts, sweatpants, t-shirts, or wife-beaters. He has long-term experience with the majority of the weight and machines found in McComas’ weight room, and falls into the category of “serious lifters,” rather than just an occasional gym-goer. He is very perseverant in his work out regiment, and has a focused mindset. The persona I described above is an “insider” of the McComas weight room community, as well as the larger weight lifting community as a whole. As an insider, my character is a part of the weight lifting community rather than just an observer. In the case of the specific community which I chose to write about, I believed that an insider persona would be better suited to represent the audience I am writing to versus an outsider, simply

I work as a gymnastics coach at Trousdell Gymnastics Center. It is a recreational center that provides programs for all Tallahassee residents, specializing in gymnastics and exercise. The goal of this organization is to provide a safe and affordable program that keeps the community fit and engaged. They offer recreational gymnastics classes for boys and girls of all ages. There are also preschool and kindergarten programs for the younger children. On the other end of the spectrum there are adult classes that teach gymnastics and overall fitness. In addition, the gym offers classes for children with special needs. Finally, Trousdell offers a competitive gymnastics program for exceptional boys and girls. Three Olympic gymnasts have come through this program. Trousdell Gymnastics Center is named after a former Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Director Randy Trousdell, a man passionate about his community and the health of its children. Since it’s opening over 60 years ago the gym has impacted 500,000 children’s lives. I coach recreational classes for girls ages seven to fifteen years old. I begin every class by leading an extensive stretch and then we go to the events of the day where I set up stations for gymnasts to practice different skills. I end every class with conditioning to help the gymnasts grow stronger so that they can perform skills successfully. Trousdell Gymnastics Center coaches have a responsibility to these children. It is our goal to make the two hours a
I feel as though if this essay had a more serious approach to it, it would not have been as often read. After the fall of the Taliban, the number of gyms in Afghanistan increased rapidly. The author of this essay, Broudy, wanted to know why and so he began a journey that led to the essay being written. Working out became so common that store shelves became filled with weight-lifting gear and protein powders. Broudy believes that “There is a lot to learn here about what it means to be strong.” After reading the article I strongly agree with Broudy about this. Part if the reason that so many gyms were put up is that there were so many abandoned buildings. Being that the unemployment rate is so high, a lot of men have an excessive amount of time that they can spend in the gyms. Going to the gym becomes a way of life for them. One of the people Broudy interviewed stated that his list of things to do would go as following “1. Build some factories, so Afghans no longer have to work on the street. 2. Building housing, so Afghans won’t have to live in ruins. 3. Build a new university,so Afghans can learn, and better themselves.” I think this goes to show that some of the Afghans want nothing more than to busy themselves and better the country. “It’s an order that begins with rubble. From the rubble they build a gym. In the gym, they build their bodies. And with those
Millions of students across the nation spend countless mornings and late nights in the weight room trying to achieve something greater. Weight rooms, much like the one I grew to know here in Aberdeen, are the beginning to so many dreams coming true. The bright lights and loud music invite you into a place of team building and hard work.
One sport that I did not even view as a sport before is weightlifting. What is weightlifting? It is the sport or activity of lifting barbells or other heavy weights. However, it is more than just that. Like many sportive activities, they all benefit the ones who are active and committed. Nevertheless, weightlifting is a good benefactor on the muscles, bones, joints, and the common risks of the human body. “Weightlifting strengthens your bones and can help you stay active and healthy as you age” is a factual quote from the article “Why Is Lifting Weights Good for You?” The encouragement of knowing that weightlifting is healthy will be supported with the analysis of the article, my opinion of the matter, and how it affects students’ lives today.
The ratio of men to women in most weight rooms is nowhere near equal. Adult females tend to shy away from loading a bar with weights and ‘pumping the iron.’ The issue is that women are not offered an introduction to lifting when they are young. A class that is designed for female beginners is needed in schools. Girls deserve the focused attention of a trainer that advocates for their education in the weight room. Working out is proven to cause boosts in both mental and physical strength and females should not be left out of such a beneficial activity. Creating a women’s lifting course presents them with the opportunity to learn exercises, build self-esteem, and lead a healthier lifestyle.
The gendered theme to my presentation was on gendered bodies in sports for both men and woman. I looked at how the image of an athlete is expressed to us through social networks and newspapers. They present us with the images of athletes and indirectly tells us how we’re supposed to look in becoming a good athlete. Starting from a young age these gendered bodies in sports influence our value we have for them and how we want to appear as we play the game. Women are constantly being bombarded with images of a skinny fit body and how much that can affect the way a women feel about their talent within a sport. Often when we see these role models of ours in a certain demeanor, we often tend to want to replicate that image. While men on the other
On Sunday, February 29, 2016, at 6 pm I went to the gym on campus to observe the behaviors and interactions of those who choose to workout there. I chose this particular location for its diversity in attendees, with the goal of trying to understand the differences between the way men and woman workout there.
The primary responsibility of a personal trainer is to provide a service to their client in a close proximity for an extended period of time. This dynamic is significant because past research has suggested that stereotypes and prejudices affect one's interaction with others. Historically, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals have been at a disadvantage in the sports arena. The literature postulates that sexual minorities face discrimination in both the workplace and sports related activities (Cunningham Sartore, and McCullough, 2010). One hundred and six participants enrolled in physical education classes at two universities received a packet of material at the end of class regarding the hiring of a personal trainer. According to Cunningham, Sartore, and McCullough, the directions read, "Suppose you are hiring a personal trainer for a fitness organization. A picture and the qualifications of an applicant are provided below. Please review the applicant's credentials and then respond to the items on the following page." Each participant responded to the applicant's qualifications, and made suggestions regarding hiring. Students were also asked to provide their demographic information. In addition, the participants used three semantics to distinguish applicants: trustworthy-dishonest, moral-immoral, and ethical-wicked. Participants were also asked if they knew the applicant's
What is the most important fundamental of communication? Some may argue that fundamental’s such as channels, tone, and bias free language would be considered the most effective when communicating, but one fundamental many overlook is that of audience analysis. Audience analysis can be the difference between a mundane communication and an appealing informative type of communication. So below I will explain why audience analysis is a key fundamental of communication due to its purpose, demographics, and psychographics.
Two important elements in understanding your audience is understanding who you’re speaking too and everyday struggles. Know your audience what are their ages, male, female status, education level, religion, language and culture? These factors will be the most important part of your speech. Knowing who your audience is will help you learn information that can help you to build a common understanding between you and the audience. An important key in public speaking situations is the imbalanced sharing of speaking time between the speaker and audience. The speaker talks more and the audience listens repeatedly without asking questions or responding with any reactions or responses to something.
Nowadays, colleges are building gyms and hiring personal trainers for their students to help students get a healthy college life. Exercise is actually not only part of our health concern, but also part of students’ college life. There are a lot of information for students to know about exercise. Students always get too many options when they go to the gym but that doesn’t mean students can get workout in whatever the way they like. Reports shows that many students will go to exercise at least 2 days a week. But there are students who will stop their exercise because they get bored of their daily routine. There are also students who do not like exercise. Many things happened before the exercise, during the exercise and after the exercise. If
A quote from Alexander Gregg says, “There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience”.When we analysis our audience it helps us with the third item, getting your subject into the heart of our audience. Basically, the book definition says that audience analysis is to consider the six major sociological or demographical variables in our audience.Well I think that audience analysis is to understand the differences and similarities between me and my audience so that I can give a better speech. Though most of the time we don't know whom are we going to speak for or how many people will be there. But for our cultural artefact assignment we had our
For this talk show host assignment, I analyzed one of my favorite hosts, Conan O’Brien. During the episode I watched, Conan interacts with his guest and listens as they relate a personal anecdote. Conan uses excellent communication techniques by clarifying, rewording, and relaying information at opportune moments throughout the story. Not only does this encourage the guest and help them create a cohesive timeline, it also helps enhance the audience’s understanding and helps ensure an accurate account.
I am anxious to complete my studies while being in a tranquil and uplifting environment. To facilitate my knowledge, I want to test myself progressively. As an NAU Honors student, I will be ebullient to learn everything about Exercise Science and participate in study sessions. Further, I will philanthropically help different understudies with their training, add to the wellbeing and health clubs, and take part in all Honors events. I will contribute my thoughts, enthusiasm for learning, and propensity to study. Being an understudy of the Honors College will not just permit me to intelligibly find information about health and fitness, however, to convey and to interface with others that impart the excitement for this area of study. Notwithstanding my reviews, I will have the capacity to apply my insight to genuine circumstances, particularly with my clients while I am a student fitness
