Literary genre is the term used to refer to any form of writing. There are many categories of writing such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Whether they come in the form of short stories, books, newspapers or even text messages, they are still deemed as ‘literary genre’. In previous classes (such as English 4 or English 101) it was required to know how to read, write, and analyze short stories, writings, poems, books, and more. The main genres worked upon were usually nonfiction such as biographies or autobiographies.

Genre is a pivotal factor in regards to any type of writing, whether it be about business, science, or even fashion (see Bawarshi; Berkenkotter & Huckin; Pare; Winsor). Although a business document may have a variety of points that must be included (see Berkenkotter & Huckin), it is clear that all genres differ within themselves (see Pare). The paper will consider the similarities and differences among the literary forms of drama, poetry, and the short story. Certainly, an obvious similarity is that they are all forms of literature and as such have the great potential to affect people's hearts, minds, and experiences. Poetry, nursey rhymes, biblical verses, vocal, lyrical and instrumental art and the fuzzy genre of music and writing are all ubiquitous forms of human expression.
