UPS’s alternative fuels fleet is in response to growing trends in government and environmental policies along with scientific discoveries in clean energy. The government launched a National Clean Fleets Partnership aimed at helping businesses incorporate vehicles that run on alternate fuels. The public private partnership began a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and businesses such as UPS’s. Over the years UPS’s has tried different options to achieve cost savings by using fuel efficient alternative vehicles dating back to the 1930’s. The first alternative vehicle they started using was electric cars to deliver packages in New York City. These electric cars could only reach 20-mph which was ideal in New York City, …show more content…
With the 2004 discovery of a massive shale gas fields in the Marcellus Shale region of the United States this has caused the price of liquefied natural gas to drop in price making it a competitive choice to diesel. This information is giving UPS more options to alternative fuels at a price that the company can afford and still make a profit. UPS continues to test and gather information on alternative fuels that would be best for their business and the environment. It is important for businesses such as UPS to stay on top of changes in the external environment so they can make the best decisions for the business. Without the discovery of the shale gas fields UPS would not have the options that they currently do. The business needs to continue to stay up to date with external environment information to know which alternative fuel technologies will become central over time. UPS will continue testing new technologies in order to determine which energy source will have the greatest benefit to the business. Sustainability is economic development that generates wealth and meets the needs of the current population while preserving society and the environment for the needs of future generations. UPS purchased 48 liquified natural gas engine tractor trailers in 2011, by the

For years environmentalists have been screaming about going green, recycling and reusing products, and so forth. So the idea of our vehicles using alternative fuel sources would be a welcomed change. With the dozen of vehicles and fuel sources being introduced, it is now a possibility to add alternative fuel vehicles to our rental car fleet. Through this presentation, gasoline and alternative fuel vehicles will be fully outlined; the history, the sources of fuel, and consumer incentives will all be explained.
Operation leaders are tasked to identify the critical success factors and core competencies of their business functions and objectives in order to generate sustainable long-term growth. Critical success factors are actions essential for a business to reach its objectives. (Heizer & Render, p. 42, 2009). UPS’s key success factors are its efficiencies in scheduling, integrating the stream of goods, its ability to provide multiple solutions such as “harmonizing the flow of goods, information and funds across customer supply chains” while enabling consumers to “evolve in new and necessary ways” (Lewis, Forquer & Quinter, pg. 2, 2007). UPS’s environmental factors include their supply chain design and planning, competitors in logistics such as FedEx, distribution services, diversification in the global environment and focusing on differentiation. UPS is also an expert in its industry because the strategy is globally focused and is centered on diversification of its systems (See Appendix1.1)
For over forty years now, scientists and researchers have been tirelessly searching for an alternative to fossil fuels. Biofuels have become an interesting contender in the search for the replacement of the non-renewable energy source. Biofuels have been used throughout history for over thousands of years. There is a large debate over biofuels and its true impact on the environment. Those involved in the discussion debating whether biofuels have any real overwhelming benefits compared to fossil fuels could argue for its usage. According to recent research performed by the University of Michigan, biofuels may not be the best alternative for fossil fuels. Regardless of its impact on the environment, biofuels are becoming more popular particularly when the price of oil rises.

Well we all know that the energy system is very unstable because the total energy available on the earth is limited, and man has exploited all the conventional technologies to fulfill his needs. By the use of these conventional technologies, the world also has a disability, with problems such as global warming. Consumption of energy by man increased gradually as his wants also increase. The conventional energy resources mainly include fossil fuels, but research shows that this fuel source will be depleted completely in approximately 20-25 years. This could cause major setbacks around the world. As a result, we need an alternative source of fuel that could keep the world running on its wheel. One possibility is ethanol. Chemically extract
When UPS redefined its core business, the description included the transportation of goods, but also funds. They wanted a way to leverage their expertise and infrastructure to transfer funds entities. UPS has always dealt with COD payments, credit assessment, billing , and cash flow. Fossil fuels are an important part of life. When you turn on the lights, watch TV, or take a shower, the electricity that you are using is being generated by fossil fuels. The three types of fossil fuels are coal, crude oil, and natural gas. They all take millions of years to form, so they are considered to be “non-renewable”- eventually, the fossil fuels will all be used up. One dangerous biological effect of using fossil fuels is ocean acidification. Extracting and transporting fossil fuels can also be very dangerous. Environmentally damaging accidents such as groundwater contamination, land subsidence, and oil spills occur frequently. Global warming is another possible environmental effect. Fossil fuels have a crucial role in modern
Finding energy sources is an issue that polarizes scientists, politicians and citizens alike. The most critical points of this debate are at fossil fuels and renewable energy. Energy efficiency is arguably the most dire concern facing the planet, because it significantly impacts all areas of everyday life. Common ground can be found in this controversy because both parties do agree that humans have a responsibility to future generations. That responsibility is to preserve the resources of the Earth, while offering this generation energy that is affordable and accessible.
UPS did not venture their business outside the United States until the mid-1970s. Canada and Germany were two of first locations UPS decided to expand their business (Rodrigue, n.d.). There were several cultural and logistical challenges that UPS faced when embarking on the expansion of their company into Germany. However, they maintained their core values and operating principles of UPS. Globalization wasn’t very profitable in the beginning of this expansion but UPS stay the course with their strategy and looked at
