INTRODUCTION
To develop, encourage, and embrace cultural consciousness, students in third grade will work together to create a multicultural environment, where the teacher will help students develop a positive attitude towards different race, ethic and cultural groups, in addition each student will receive equal educational opportunities (1997). Countries and Cultures Around the World is an integrated social studies unit that will promote an atmosphere of inquiry in the classroom and help students gain a broader appreciation for other cultures. The unit is comprised of interdisciplinary lessons, with activities that teach social studies, literacy (reading and writing), art and music.

GOALS AND RATIONAL
Students will have a better understanding of the meaning culture and the difference of cultures. Students will recognize characteristics of countries other than the United States to which a person can travel. Students will also identify groups of people who live in other countries as well as customary foods from other countries. This will lead students to identify family traditions and holidays from other countries.

This course focuses on important to teach students about diversity to help them develop empathy for others. We will read about diversity and cultures to help students understand what diversity really means and how it applies to them.
